Handmade Solid Wooden Bed Frames
We make our solid wood bed frames ourselves, giving us control over the timber, construction and finish from start to finish. Rather than using veneered timber, our collection is made from solid Scandinavian pine and solid European oak, with each bed manufactured to order in our own workshop.
Our team combines hands-on woodworking experience with precision machinery to produce each component accurately before the bed is finished and prepared for delivery. The result is a substantial wooden frame made for regular use, whether it is destined for a main bedroom, guest room or somewhere else in the home.
Find the Right Wooden Bed for Your Bedroom
There is no single wooden bed design that works for every room. Frame height, storage, headboard style and the amount of available floor space can all influence which option makes the most sense.
For a lower profile, explore our low wooden beds and platform beds. If you prefer a more traditional frame height, our standard height beds provide plenty of choice across different designs.
Storage is another consideration, particularly where bedroom space is limited. Our wooden ottoman beds provide built-in storage beneath the mattress, while matching under-bed drawers can be added to compatible frames.
For more of a statement, choose from wooden beds with headboards or our solid timber four poster beds.
Wooden Bed Frame Sizes
Our wooden bed frames are available across the main standard UK bed sizes, from single frames for smaller bedrooms through to emperor beds for rooms with considerably more space.
- Single – 90 x 190cm (3’0” x 6’3”)
- Small double – 120 x 190cm (4’0” x 6’3”)
- Double – 135 x 190cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
- King – 150 x 200cm (5’0” x 6’6”)
- Super King – 180 x 200cm (6’0” x 6’6”)
- Emperor – 215 x 215cm (7’0” x 7’0”)
If standard UK dimensions don't work for your mattress or available space, we can also manufacture a bespoke wooden bed to your required dimensions.
Solid Oak or Pine?
Choosing between oak and pine largely comes down to the look, feel and budget you have in mind. Both options give you a bed made from real solid timber rather than veneered material.
Our solid European oak beds showcase the distinctive grain and natural variation of oak, making them a great choice when you want the timber itself to be a prominent part of the design. Explore our full range of oak bed frames.
Our solid pine bed frames are handmade from Scandinavian pine and provide a more accessible route into a substantial solid timber bed. With a choice of finishes available, pine can work across a wide range of bedroom styles without losing the character of the natural wood.
Choose Your Wooden Bed Frame Finish
The right finish can change the appearance of the timber while still allowing its natural grain and character to show through. Our solid pine and oak beds are available in a selection of finishes, including unfinished, white, light, medium, walnut and black, making it easier to match your frame with existing furniture and décor.
Our stains, waxes and oils are selected to enhance and protect the timber, rather than simply covering it. For solid oak beds, we also offer a range of premium Rubio Monocoat finishes, including Pure, Natural, Chocolate and Walnut.
Not sure which will work in your room? Colour samples are available to order before choosing your bed.
Made to Order in North Yorkshire
Every Wooden Bed Company bed frame is made to order in our North Yorkshire workshop. Our team combines traditional woodworking principles with modern precision machinery, allowing us to manufacture each frame accurately while keeping the hands-on craftsmanship that goes into working with solid timber.
Responsible manufacturing matters to us too. We only manufacture using timber from sustainably managed sources, where trees are continually replanted. We also support tree planting through Ecologi and have achieved 0% wood waste throughout our manufacturing process.
From machining the timber through to finishing the completed frame, everything takes place in-house before your bed is prepared for delivery.
Wooden Beds Made Around Your Space
Sometimes a standard bed simply isn't the right fit. Awkward room dimensions, unusual mattress sizes or specific storage requirements can all call for something more individual.
Because we manufacture our own beds, we can create bespoke wooden beds to suit your requirements. This can include custom dimensions and finishes, as well as features such as under-bed storage, headboards and footboards. If you have something specific in mind, get in touch with our team to discuss your requirements and receive a bespoke quote.
Wooden Bed Frames
FAQ's
What is a wooden bed frame?
A wooden bed frame is a bed base made from solid or engineered wood, designed to support your mattress using a slatted or solid foundation. It offers a strong, durable and timeless option for any bedroom.
Are wooden bed frames durable?
Yes, wooden bed frames are highly durable, especially when made from solid timber such as oak or pine. They are built to provide long-term support and stability for everyday use - our bed frames are strength testes to 490kg and come with a 12 year warranty for extra peace of mins.
What size wooden bed frames are available?
Our wooden bed frames are available in all standard UK sizes, including single, small double, double, king size and super king, making it easy to find the right fit for your space.
Do our wooden bed frames come with a mattress?
No, our wooden bed frames are sold without a mattress. However, you can add a compatible mattress when purchasing your bed and save 5% when bought together - just select the appropriate size mattress when adding your bed to your cart.
Do wooden beds need a box spring?
No, our wooden bed frames use a slatted base, so a box spring is not required. A suitable mattress can be placed directly onto the frame.
Can wooden bed frames include storage?
Yes, many wooden bed frames include storage options such as our matching under bed storage drawers or ottoman lift-up bases, making them ideal for maximising space in your bedroom.
What are the benefits of a solid wood bed frame?
Solid wood bed frames offer a strong, durable foundation for your mattress while bringing the natural grain and character of real timber into the room. Our frames are made from solid Scandinavian pine or European oak and come with a 12-year guarantee.
Are solid wood bed frames better than veneer?
Solid wood and veneer are constructed differently. Solid timber frames are made from real wood throughout the relevant timber components, while veneered furniture uses a thin layer of real wood over another material. At The Wooden Bed Company, we use solid Scandinavian pine and European oak rather than veneered timber to create substantial bed frames designed for long-term use.
Is oak or pine better for a wooden bed frame?
Both make excellent solid timber bed frames, but they offer different characteristics. European oak has a distinctive grain and a more premium feel, while Scandinavian pine provides a more affordable solid wood option. Both are available across a choice of finishes, so the best option will depend on your preferred appearance and budget.
Are Wooden Bed Company beds made in the UK?
Every bed frame is manufactured and finished in-house at our North Yorkshire workshop. Our team combines hands-on woodworking experience with modern precision machinery, and each bed is made to order rather than sourced as a finished frame from another manufacturer.
Do wooden bed frames come flat packed?
Our wooden beds are supplied flat packed to make delivery and access into the home more practical. Most frames can be assembled with a hand-powered drill and the help of another person, with fitting instructions available for the different bed designs.
Can I order a wooden bed frame in a bespoke size?
We can manufacture wooden beds to non-standard dimensions for unusual mattresses, awkward rooms or spaces where a standard UK bed size isn't suitable. Bespoke orders can also include different finishes and optional features such as storage, headboards and footboards.
How long should a wooden bed frame last?
A well-made solid timber bed frame is designed for long-term use, although its lifespan will depend on its construction, use and care. Our wooden bed frames are manufactured from solid oak or pine and backed by a 12-year guarantee.
